Outside of NU-TORO, I work as a research assistant at the Early Intervention Research group which conducts clinical trials on early life interventions to promote social and language development in children. I also volunteer as a mentor for Highschool students who are interested in the health career. I enjoy playing card games, knitting, listening to music, journaling, and learning new languages. I have a goal to be fluent in at least one new language before I graduate and I am currently trying to learn Twi.

I am a Pakistani-American Muslim undergraduate student at Northwestern University with a major in Biology and Global Health on the Pre-Med track. I am especially passionate about addressing health disparities within women’s healthcare. In my free time, I enjoy looking into the latest fashion, destroying my friends in Mortal Kombat, reading fictional novels, and scrolling through TikTok. As a member of NU-TORO, I hope to ensure that marginalized groups within science, especially biochemistry, are getting the recognition they deserve while also showing students from marginalized groups that it is possible for them to succeed and thrive in the science field.

I am a pre med student, and my studies at Northwestern have been centered  mainly around human health, not just from a  biological standpoint; I also enjoy integrating the social aspects and factors behind health disparities through a modern anthropological lens. Additionally in my time at Northwestern, I have participated in music organizations such as our marching band, and Soul4Real A capella, and I have worked as an athletic training aide for our softball team, primarily learning about patient care.

I am an undergraduate student studying Neuroscience and Global Health at NU. I am an undergraduate researcher at the Pinto Lab at Feinberg, where we research how neural circuits interact to support decision making in mice. I am also part of Aurora, an organization that works with North Korean refugees, and NU Special Olympics. In my freetime, I enjoy traveling, puzzles, and spending time with friends and family.

Laura Hertz (Graduate student advisor)

My name is Laura M Hertz and I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences (IBiS) graduate program. I am a member of the Lucks lab in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, where I study how RNA dynamically folds during transcription. I’m a fan of most things RNA from mRNA vaccines, non-coding RNAs, to molecular condensates. During my non-RNA time, I enjoy reading, baking, traveling, and the theatre.
